GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is one of the oldest digital image formats, invented in 1987 by CompuServe. It supports a palette of up to 256 colours and is best known for short looping animations. Static GIFs are still used for simple logos, icons, and meme images across social media and messaging apps.
GIF uses lossless LZW compression, which preserves every pixel exactly — but the 256-colour limit means it handles photographs poorly. A photo saved as GIF looks washed out and banded. Converting a static GIF to JPG typically produces a smaller, better-looking image for photos and real-world scenes, while JPG's 16.7 million colour palette reproduces gradients and skin tones accurately.
Static GIF files are larger and lower quality than JPG for photographic content. A photo stored as GIF is capped at 256 colours, making skin tones, skies, and gradients look stepped and artificial. Converting to JPG gives you millions of colours and typically a smaller file size.
