BMP (Bitmap Image File) is Microsoft's native uncompressed raster format, introduced with Windows in 1987. Every pixel is stored individually with no compression, giving BMP files perfect quality but enormous file sizes — a single 1920×1080 BMP can be 6 MB or more, compared to under 1 MB for the same photo as JPG.
BMP files are still used in Windows system icons, clipboard data, legacy software, and some embedded applications. They support up to 32-bit colour depth, which means they can represent 16.7 million colours accurately. The main drawback is pure size: BMP is the lossless format of last resort, kept alive by Windows internals rather than by any practical sharing advantage.
